Argentine tennis legend Jose Luis Clerc signs on as Ambassador of Algodon Global Properties

José Luis Clerc, one of the most recognized and revered professional tennis players in Argentina’s history, has recently partnered with our project and will serve as Ambassador of Algodon Global Properties. Mr. Clerc will also take on the role of Director of the Clerc Tennis Center at Algodon Wine Estates, where he will oversee the development and construction of the estate’s tennis complex and supervise the inauguration of the tennis program. He will also function as Dean of the Clerc Tennis Academy at Algodon Wine Estates, which will focus on “Future Young Players”; “Adults”; “Corporate & Executive Team Building”; “Sports and Stress Management”; “Group Tournaments”; etc. Mr. Clerc will provide his personal and professional international contacts in order to develop tennis exhibitions with former and/or top world players and futures tournaments to be held at Algodon Wine Estates.

On his most recent visit to the estate, Mr. Clerc suggested creating the courts in two phases, which will include a center court stadium as well as 6 additional clay courts, 3 hard courts, and 1 grass court. The mini-stadium, which will be lowered for unobstructed panoramic views from above, as well as from the restaurant’s second-story dining patio, is based on an “in-ground” design from a popular tennis club in Monaco.

Mr. Clerc started playing professionally in 1977, winning 25 ATP Titles, and retiring in 1988. His highest rank was World No. 4 in August 4, 1981, following a run of 27 victories and 4 titles in one month, and had year-ending rankings 8th in 1980, 5th in 1981, 6th in 1982, and 8th in 1983. Mr. Clerc represented Argentina for the Davis Cup from 1976 to 1989. With teammate Guillermo Vilas, Argentina was runner-up in the 1981 Davis Cup losing 3–1 to United States in Cincinnati. He defeated Roscoe Tanner in a singles match, but lost to John McEnroe, and to Fleming/McEnroe in doubles with Vilas. Also with Vilas and Carlos Gattiker, Argentina won the 1980 World Team Cup, beating Italy 3–0 in Buenos Aires. He received the ATP Sportsmanship Award of 1981, as well as Argentine Konex Awards in 1980 and 1990 for Merit in Tennis. Mr. Clerc currently runs a tennis school in Argentina and participates in senior tournaments. He also coaches Julia Cohen, a top American junior player. Mr. Clerc was recently featured as a commentator for ESPN during New York’s 2008 US Open.
