In a recent international olive oil tasting competition held in Argentina's wine capital of Mendoza, our estate-grown olive oil won the gold medal for the "blended" category. In an associated wine tasting competition, our 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon also won a silver medal. Diego Coll Benegas, Algodon Wine Estates' Director of Project Development, Tourism & Hospitality, was on hand to represent our brand and accept the award on our behalf.
This is the second-largest competition of its kind in South America, and it is ranked 16th in importance out of 151 major wine competitions in the world. Both events, the 3rd annual Olivinus International Olive Oil Competition and the 6th annual Vinus International Wine Competition, were held under a single venue that took place on August 24-29. The competitions included 221 olive oil entrants from 17 countries, as well as 500 wines from over 28 countries. This year's tasting juries were chaired by notable journalists, winemakers, and epicurean authors from Argentina as well as the international community.
About our olive oil: Algodon Extra Virgin Olive Oil is served exclusively at Algodon Wine Estates' award-winning restaurant, and will also be served at Algodon Mansion's Chez Nous after its Grand Opening in December. Our top quality olive oil is derived from handpicked, estate-grown olives, freshly bottled after its first cold pressing. Algodon Extra Virgin Olive Oil is perfectly blended to compliment our wines, rounding out an exceptional Argentine culinary experience.
Tasting notes: Golden in color with a soft green hue, this spectacular estate-grown olive oil presents the nose with hints of fruit, subtle scents of green apple, almonds and notes of fresh herbs. On the palate it is balanced, slightly sour and spicy with a persistent end of mouth.
Blend: Pendolino 70%, Arauco 20%, Empeltre 10%
About our Cabernet Sauvignon: Algodon vineyards are cultivated utilizing traditional agricultural techniques developed by the land's native Huarpe Indians. Our outstanding vineyards are primed year-round and then carefully hand-harvested at their peak maturity and optimum tannin levels. Algodon Wine Estates' renowned winemakers bring decades of experience, as well as craftsmanship and tradition that have been passed down for generations.
Tasting notes: This wine shows off a bright ruby-red color with violet hues. Aromas of dry fruit, berries and spices are balanced with vanilla and smoked notes. There is a pleasant texture and good balance between fruit and tannins. A fresh and lingering finish. This wine pairs wonderfully with all kinds of red meat, game, seasoned cheeses, and spicy sauces.
