Algodon Wine Estates: Bringing Together the Wine Routes of Patagonia & Mendoza
Editorial from Scott Mathis, Chairman & Founder
"Handpicked and perfectly blended to compliment our wines."
Although Argentina is more recently known for its Malbec wines, it is important to also note its significant role as South America's leading producer of olive oil and the 4th largest exporter of olives in the world. Argentina's olive oil exports and profits are climbing at record levels, and its higher-end virgin oils are being exported to the United States, Europe, South Africa, Australia, Japan, Canada, and China among others. Olive oil is at its best in the first six months, and is meant to be consumed young. This puts Argentina in a competitively advantageous position because its production and harvest season falls opposite to Europe's, when demand is high for fresh, newly bottled oils.
In recent years, some Mendoza wineries have redefined the traditional role of the wine estate by selling estate grown, high-end oil olive varietals and blends to compliment their Malbecs. Many productive farming estates or fincas highly value the advantages of cultivating the olive tree because it is an incredibly resilient crop, and long-lived with a life expectancy of 500 years or more.
Algodon Wine Estates half-century old olive orchard's primary varietals are the Arauco, Empeltre and the Pendolino olives. This top quality, extra virgin olive oil is estate grown and freshly bottled after its first cold pressing; and is perfectly blended to round out an exceptional Argentine culinary experience at our award-winning restaurant.
Tasting notes: Golden in color with a soft green hue, this spectacular estate-grown olive oil presents the nose with hints of fruit, subtle scents of green apple, almonds and notes of fresh herbs. On the palate it is balanced, slightly sour and spicy with a persistent end of mouth.
Blend: Pendolino 70%, Arauco 20%, Empeltre 10%
