In a recent edition of USA Today, readers are invited to "drink in the flavor, beauty of the vineyard" in an article that details various luxury wine communities and the people who aspire to live in one. "Not so long ago," the article states, "wine country vacations and dream homes were limited to a handful of ultra-desirable spots such as California's Napa Valley, Italy's Tuscany, and France's Burgundy and Bordeaux regions. But wine production has exploded globally..." Algodon Wine Estates is described in the piece as an "affordable alternative" to Tuscany. You can read the full article here.
Algodon Mansion has a nice media mention in the January issue of Continental Airlines In-flight Magazine. Titled "What's New Is Old", the article describes the mansion as an atmospheric blend of "Harlem's Cotton Club in its 1920s heyday with the Belle époque glamour of Argentina's golden years." Continental's magazine reaches more than 2.5 million readers each month. Read the full article here!

Internationally recognized wine critic, Stephen Tanzer, and the acclaimed bimonthly International Wine Cellar online magazine have favorably reviewed Algodon Wine Estates 2004 Malbec, 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2004 Bonarda. Each wine scored an encouraging 87 with Mr. Tanzer, who described the Malbec as; “sweet and nicely concentrated, with good breadth to the smoke and bitter chocolate flavors...No shortage of substance.” Mr. Tanzer’s review, which appears in the Jan/Feb ’09 issue, focuses on “the best new wines from Argentina” (this is also the article’s title) and includes reviews of nearly 300 recommended and notable wines from several different wine producing regions throughout the country.
Our Cabernet Sauvignon has scored an outstanding rating of 8 points on a scale of 1 to 10 at a recent wine tasting conducted by Wines of Argentina. The event’s judges were featured Master Sommeliers visiting Argentina from the United States. Our wine was also awarded the “Best Buy” distinction of all the wines participating in the event. "This is a remarkable honor," said Algodon winemaker Mauro Nosenzo, "as we were competing against some of the best wineries in Argentina. The award is testament to the success of our commitment to quality and innovative new technology in winemaking."
Algodon Wine Estates takes great pleasure in having participated in the festivities for Wine Enthusiast's 2008 Wine Star Awards. The event was held at the New York Public Library on January 26, 2009. The theme of this year's celebration was "innovation," and honors were presented for excellence in eleven major industry categories. A special award honored Mendoza, Argentina as Wine Region of the Year, and Algodon Wine (as well as a handful of other Argentine wines) was chosen to be served to attendees in order to represent the region's excellence. In honoring the region, Wine Enthusiast explains that Mendoza "is the heart, mind and soul of the Argentine wine industry, which has been growing by leaps and bounds in the past few decades...Today Mendoza is a wine region on par with many of the best in the world."
Friends,
As you can see from our latest newsletter, we have plenty to report. One thing we didn't touch on in this issue that I'll mention here is the finalizing of our new wine labels. After much internal consideration and discussion with our designers, we've come up with a brand-new look that speaks volumes. It's sophisticated and chic, and really looks great. One of our partners- and Master of Wine- Anthony Foster of Bonhote Foster Limited, was visiting New York recently and contributed some truly valuable insight and input towards the new labels, as well. We'll be showing them to you soon.
Good news regarding Argentina can be found in the news almost every day. Valuation of the ARS is currently the lowest it's been against the USD since 2002, and Argentine stocks are up. Standard & Poor's gives Argentina a ‘B-' credit rating, and confirms that their economic outlook remains stable.
In another recent article from Continental Airlines In-flight Magazine, freelance journalist and Buenos Aires hipster, Ian Mount, has written a terrific piece titled Capital Gains, where he expresses his take on Buenos Aires' thriving culture of cool. Mount writes; "In attempting to describe Argentina to visiting friends, it's easy to oversimplify and say that it's not the Latin America of tequila and tacos. But what is most attractive about Buenos Aires these days is the way it bangs together its European and South American sides without worrying too much about the rules." The article touches on art, architecture, popular puertas cerradas (or "closed door" restaurants literally located in peoples' private residences) and the city's evolution of trendiness over the past few years. Mount also shares an online blog, GoodAirs.com, with his wife and fellow writer/editor, Cintra Scott. Both are American expats who have relocated to Argentina.
In a recent Reuters feature article, written by Kevin Gray, with the headline; "Despite slowdown, polo is big business in Argentina," we are led into the world of Argentine Polo. The article discusses Argentina's dominance of the sport, a bit of its history, and the country's unwavering status as the world's top destination for polo. We are also told of the thriving polo culture and its relation to similar luxury real estate developments to our own Algodon Wine Estates. Chief Financial Officer for Jumeirah Group's Culu Culu Polo Resort in Lobos, Argentina, is quoted as saying; "Our targeted public is still living the way they always have despite the (economic) crisis...there is always a public for a high quality product like this." Algodon Wine Estates' twin polo fields are scheduled to be excavated and seeded this year, and our 18-hole championship golf course will be ready for play by May 2009.
